In the summer of 2016 I was honored with becoming the first ever Motion Design Intern at TEGNA. During my time there I was able to work my way up and soon enough I was helping with Daily On-Air Graphics. I was lucky enough to work with big names such as the 2017 Rio Olympics, Denver Broncos, 9NEWS, as well as designing a nationwide Fourth of July Network and Hurricane/Tropical Storm Weather packages for all 43 of their news stations. In retrospect, I learned more about motion design during that one summer than in any other class. More importantly I learned how to work as a member of a team and how to take and adjust to client critique.

Commissioned By: TEGNA

Programs Used: Cinema 4D, Adobe Photoshop, Illustrator, After Effects, Audition, and Premiere
For this assignment I was responsible for working within the TEGNA nationwide brand guidelines to create a bump in for Hurricanes and Tropical Storms. I used one of their simple box animations and added some rain for dramatic effect. From there, I laid out type for all the possible Hurricane and Tropical Storm names and rendered them out in C4D. This was a process; however, now that it is completed all of TEGNA's news stations (including my very own 9NEWS) will have all the possible hurricane names up through the year. Overall this was a simple project. The hardest part was surviving and planning around the substantial render times.

This was by far my favorite project to work on during this internship, mostly due to the subject matter and names attached. At the same time, this made this project the most intimidating, especially since this was my first large project that required blending C4D and After Effects. This was also my first time designing to an audio script. In the end I think the mixture of vector objects and 3D motion came out well. The biggest challenge in this project was staying within both the 9NEWS brand guidelines, but also the newly established Rio Olympics guidelines.

Commissioned By: 9News & TEGNA

Programs Used: Cinema 4D, Adobe Photoshop, Illustrator, After Effects, Audition, and Premiere
This was a complete network package for the Fourth of July designed to fit TEGNA's brand guidelines and to be aired nationwide on all 43 of their news stations. This was my big introduction to the TEGNA team. The days leading up to this point I had strictly been shadowing other designers. I dipped my toe in with a simple map animation and once they saw I did in fact know how to operate After Effects I was allowed to hit the ground running. Needless to say I did not take the pressure of this task lightly. I made sure to have my work critiqued by my teammates every step of the way. This was my first big project and I wanted it to be perfect. The hardest part of this project was getting out of my own head and just going for it. After this project everything else thrown at me was mentally a breeze. As far as the design itself goes the 4th Of July lockup went through over a dozen renditions before we got it to where we were satisfied.

The Broncos are big in Colorado. I don't think you can enter a single restaurant without finding an orange jersey or t-shirt. That being said, even though I am not a football guy I get excited when I get to work with brands like this. Overall this project was simple. 9NEWS' brand guidelines are the same as TEGNA's so it was smooth sailing. The types layout and animations were very simple, yet I get excited every-time I see my work on the television at the sports bar.
